Celebrities & Athletes in Cannabis

cannabis celebrities & athletes

With legalization sweeping the nation, cannabis no longer carries the stigma that it once did and is now finally being recognized for the wondrous plant that it is. Touting both medicinal and therapeutic qualities, an ever-increasing population is turning to cannabis and cannabis-related products over traditional Western medicine to soothe what ails them. No longer only sold in specialty shops, CBD products can now be found and purchased in locations anywhere from retail drug store chains to the local gas station. With these major changes, many in the public eye have not only come forth offering their support and encouraging usage, but these cannabis celebrities and cannabis athletes are even investing in and creating companies of their very own. Here are some of the most recognizable faces in the cannabis industry.

Tommy Chong

No list would be complete without Tommy. One half of the prolific comedy duo Cheech & Chong, their humor virtually revolved around their enjoyment of marijuana usage as they became superstars of the ‘70s and ‘80s with hugely successful comedy albums and hit movies such as Up in Smoke. Tommy took his success and association with marijuana a step further and used his platform to promote both the medicinal and recreational benefits as well as the decriminalization of marijuana, and even went to Federal prison in 2003 when a government sting targeted him due to his association with his son’s glass bong and pipe company. Tommy has since launched his own cannabis line with a commitment to the lowest pricing possible in an effort to make his preferred medicine affordable to any and all who need it.

Willie Nelson

Another old school cannabis user, promoter and businessman, the legendary musician Willie Nelson has never denied that it is more than just a weed to him but a way of life. His philosophy of “My stash is your stash” resulted not only in some great stories and prolific concerts but a wide and varied product line as well. As one of the most recognized artists in country music, Willie has acted in over 30 films, co-authored multiple books and used his fame to bring attention to the many causes important to him such as the usage of biofuels, the acceptance of the LGBTQ community and, of course, the legalization of marijuana.

Snoop Dogg

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known as Snoop Dogg, is another huge player in the celebrity cannabis game. Having risen to fame at barely 21 years of age as a rapper and protégé of Dr. Dre, Snoop has since sold over 35 million albums worldwide and is unarguably a verified master at personal branding. He partnered with his seemingly completely opposite of a friend, Martha Stewart, for a cooking-related television show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, is the current host of the game show The Joker’s Wild and has the distinction of owning and promoting the topmost recognizable cannabis brand with his Leafs By Snoop product line.

Martha Stewart

A widely-recognized household name, Martha has long been associated with the upper crust and activities such as cooking, gardening and interior design. Encouraged by her relationship with Snoop Dogg, she is expanding her reach into the world of CBD with her very own product line. Martha says she is always looking for ways to improve everyday living and, at 77 years of age, is well aware that by 2029 over half of the US population will be over 65 years old and that CBD and cannabis can offer an alternative to other kinds of medicines for seniors. She is also a huge lover of animals and promotes the use of CBD for pet care.

Seth Rogen

He’s an actor, comedian, writer, director, producer and one of the leading cannabis celebrities. Seth Rogen has won over audiences on both the big and small screens, usually with his portrayal of some sort of lovable buffoon, and oftentimes that character does love him some pot. In real life, Seth has committed himself to encouraging the expungement of cannabis-related criminal offenses and has become a huge Alzheimer’s Disease advocate. He has recently co-founded the cannabis brand Houseplant, sadly to the US with products currently only available in Canada, in an effort to help consumers to understand cannabis on a deeper level.

Mike Tyson

The former heavyweight boxing champion claims to smoke over $40,000 worth of cannabis each and every month, so it only makes sense that he would want to own his own pot farm. Located just outside of Los Angeles, Tyson Ranch is a way for Mike to control every stage of his cannabis production while creating high-quality products. Currently, his website does not provide any cannabis products for sale but they are available for purchase through dispensaries, and there are plans to expand the ranch into a “weed resort” where visitors can stay on the property to “immerse themselves in the lifestyle” just as he does.

John Salley

This four-time NBA championship-winning power forward channeled his love of cannabis into a post-retirement business. Focusing on health and wellness, John partnered with his daughter to launch Deuces 22, with a site that not only sells high-quality product but is also dedicated to providing information about cannabis and all the benefits available through their educational platform, Deuces Academy.

Chelsea Handler

Comedian, author and talk show host Chelsea Handler will be launching a yet unnamed cannabis product line sometime this year with an aim specifically toward women and especially moms. Her products will include vape cartridges, pre-rolls and edibles, many in an ultra-low dose form. She hopes to destigmatize usage, educate customers and plans to include little notes on her packaging to new users telling them what to expect and her advice on how to try it.

These are just a few of the familiar faces who have turned their love of cannabis into a profitable business. More are entering into the industry every day as the “Green Rush” continues and both celebrities and everyday folk alike fortify their health and wellness through their use of cannabis.
