What Does 710 Mean? The History of Oil Day

Most people, even those who are not cannabis users, are at least aware of the meaning of the term 420, and its association with those who choose to consume. But step aside, 420 – There is a new numeronym in town — and it is 710.
What is the 710 Weed Meaning?
710 has quickly become the new moniker for cannabis concentrates in general, but more specifically for cannabis oil. Why 710? It is believed to have derived from an old “dumb blonde” joke, where a blonde goes to her mechanic asking for an absurd car part because she has misread her upside-down oil cap. So since the word “oil” topsy-turvy is the number “710”, cannabis oil aficionados have begun to adopt the number as their own.
The History of 710
The term 420 is a legendary in that is deeply rooted in cannabis culture, usually believed to have stemmed from a group of highschoolers calling themselves “The Waldos” way back to 1971 in San Raphael, CA.
But the start date of the 710 slang is not nearly as clear. Claims are made that it could stem back as far as the 1960s when the Grateful Dead not only performed their music in venues but also in their very own homes, the most famous of which was located at 710 Ashbury Street in San Francisco, a spot where they not only played but also lived.
It is said that 710 was used often in the mid-2000s among certain dealer and friends circles, but in 2011, the 710 meaning and its connection to cannabis became undeniable when Task & Linus released their album “The Movement”, which not only had multiple references to cannabis culture and consumption but also featured the track “7:10”, which clearly references dabbing.
But officially? The origin date of 710 would have to be 2013. That was the year when the LA Weekly, a free alternative California-based newspaper, published an article on July 10th of that year entitled “710 is the New 420” and declared it an official stoner holiday. And then a mere two days later, the first 710 Cup came to Denver, declaring itself a celebration of cannabis concentration.
International Oil Day?
Funny enough, International Essential Oils Day, observed on July 11th, began in 2018, spearheaded by the president and COO of Young Living, one of the largest essential oil companies in the entire world. The claim: that particular date was chosen due to it being the birthday of the company’s founder. If that’s true, then it is certainly ironic that it falls just one day after what cannabis lovers have deemed International Oil Day aka Dab Day aka 710 Day — which now shines the 710 friendly meaning in a whole new light.
710 vs 420
Just as 420 (aka 4:20) is not only a slang term synonymous with pot, but also a time of afternoon (or early morning) when pot lovers around the world toke-up and a weed user’s favorite holiday, the same can be applied to the 710 meaning. And while the recognized celebration days of April 20th (4/20) and July 10th (7/10) may share a similar spirit, the purposes of those two dates definitely differ.
The date 4/20 is not just a day where people consume cannabis but also a date focusing on efforts toward cannabis legalization. As more research is allowed highlighting the many benefits of the cannabis plant, “smoking pot” is becoming less stigmatized and more mainstream. Also 4/20 is not just a holiday focusing on one particular type of cannabis product — observers can partake in anything from flower to concentrate to tinctures to edibles — which gives the date a broader appeal.
It is highly unlikely that over time the same sentiment and acceptance will apply to 7/10 for a number of reasons. July 10th is not really associated with 710 weed but rather concentrates in particular. Dabbing in general society is considered more “hardcore”.
While there are numerous benefits to cannabis concentrates, they are indeed significantly more potent than typical flower. This makes them an excellent choice for some consumers, particularly medical marijuana patients who are looking for higher-strength solutions, that said, the fear of the unfamiliar combined with the safety concerns tied to some vape and dab pens has resulted in far less public acceptance when it comes to cannabis concentrates. Also, there are many who believe that “stoners” should only be allowed one holiday as opposed to two (right?!). Will July 10th ever attain the same mass appeal as April 20th? Outlook does not lool good — but we’ll keep trying!
What Exactly is a Cannabis Concentrate?
Cannabis concentrates are highly potent extracts derived from the cannabis plant that contain a higher concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes than are found in the same amount of cannabis flower. Concentrates contain high levels of THC that can range from 40% to 90%, which is significantly stronger in content than typical high-grade cannabis (typically around 20% THC).
Average consumers can become overwhelmed with all the concentrate-related names, such as badder, butter, shatter, wax, sugar, crumble and sauce. Between the seemingly endless range of products, combined with confusing terminology and complex chemical profile descriptions, it’s no wonder the unfamiliar and uninformed can be put off.
For a very basic understanding:
- Live Resin refers to concentrate derived from the freezing of live flower, which is then pressed to extract the resin.
- Rosin Extraction refers to when both heat and pressure are used to separate trichomes from the plant.
- Bubble Hash is derived when dry ice is used to separate the trichomes.
- Rick Simpson Oil is a highly purified product created when solvent is used to strip the cannabinoids from the plant.
Solvent-based concentrates use chemicals, such as butane, propane, CO2 or ethanol, to separate the plant material, while solventless concentrates do not. While some concentrates are simply added to flower products and smoked, to consume concentrate alone, one must either use a dab & rig, a nectar collector, a vaporizer or a vape pen.
710-Friendly Meaning
Many people are repelled or negative in their response to concentrates, which mostly stems from intimidation and lack of education. That said, while 710 weed is clearly different from marijuana flower, the market for concentrates is truly growing at an exponential rate. While the 710 friendly meaning could refer to those who partake in and enjoy the use of cannabis oil and cannabis concentrates, it can also apply to any person or place that is open to and accepting of concentrates, and supports the usage of them.
In 2025, 710 has become a bit of a code word within the cannabis community that represents this very specific subculture of “dabbers” who enjoy high-level THC concentrate products. Searching under hashtags such as #710, #710Friendly, #710Life or #710Society on social media sites could be a great way to find groups and others within your community (barring the dreaded shadowban) who love concentrates or share excellent concentrate content.
How and Where to Celebrate 7/10
In the greatest of Kumbaya worlds, the July 10th holiday would be celebrated by dab experts inviting newbies into their spaces to explain the meaning behind 710 and share their favorite cannabis oil products — while of course teaching newcomers to go low and slow.
Check with your local dispensary or lounge in early July to learn about upcoming 710 events and promotions. Regular concentrate consumers may want to take advantage of the opportunity to experiment with a different concentrate type or brand or even gift themselves a new rig. Newbies or the concentrate-curious should chat with their fave budtender for an easy entrypoint into the concentrate arena.
