Dr Sean Myles holds the Faculty Research Chair in Agriculture at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Born and raised on the east coast of Canada, he received his training at Oxford in the UK, the Max Planck Institute in Germany, and Cornell and Stanford in the USA before settling back on the east coast of Canada. He deciphers the genetic codes of agricultural species in order to accelerate the breeding of improved food. His work focusses primarily on apples and grapes, but his recent work on Cannabis genomics has attracted significant attention from the Cannabis industry, the media and consumers. His research group has shown that, at the DNA level, hemp and marijuana are easily distinguishable; that claims about sativa/indica ancestry are largely bogus; and that Cannabis strain names do not represent meaningful genetic identities. He aims to educate the public about the genetics of food via social media (@foodimprover) and his website cultivatingdiversity.org.
