A Cannabis Glossary for Your Next Smoke Sesh

Ever wonder where all of the strange and creative marijuana terminology comes from? According to Time Magazine, there are at least 1,200 slang cannabis dictionary terms that cannabis enthusiasts have come up with over the years — depending on the decade. So many in fact, that an entire cannabis glossary could be written just about this one subject.

So, are common cannabis terms just slang words used to discreetly refer to the plant, or is there a reason why Jamaicans call cannabis ganja, a term deriving from India, for example? And why is it that your grandpa calls cannabis “reefer” and your parents call cannabis “pot”? In the United States, it’s been almost a century since Americans had legal access to weed. Since the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 and the subsequent criminalization of the plant, slang terms created on the street defined what cannabis was called. These street names acted as a secret password for accessing cannabis and evading law enforcement.

These days, we can be as creative as we want with our marijuana terminology, all the while shopping at our favorite local dispensaries. My, how far we’ve come! But not far enough. Even though we still have a long way to go in terms of full-scale legalization, in most states we can consume our cannabis freely no matter what phrase or word we use to refer to it.

1. Mary Jane: a pun on marijuana, just like Mary Jane, Mary Warner, Mary Weaver, and Mary and Johnny.
2. Cheeba: the term is an adulterated version of the Spanish word ‘chiva’, which stands for opium. The Spanish term started to be used in reference to Brazilian marijuana, which appeared black, sticky and gooey.
3. Ganja: derives from a Hindi word for the hemp plant in India.
4. Grass: like a bush or shrub, referring to the color. Similar slang terms are greens, greenery and green tea.
5. Herb: among Rastafarians, who use the substance religiously, this term has been used to emphasize that it is “natural” like other herbs. With a similar flare, the substance has been called “mother” and “mother nature,” as well as the “noble weed” and “righteous bush”. Similarly, in Jamaica due to a South Asian presence in the early days of the island’s colonial establishment, cannabis is also referred to as “ganja”.
6. Skunk: because of the plant’s pungent odor.
7. Chronic: describes marijuana with strong effects.
8. Broccoli: a term popularized by the rapper E40, because it is a healthy, green plant.
9. Pot: derives from the Spanish word for marijuana leaves, potiguaya.
10. Hashish: also known as hash, is an Arabic term for the substance made by compressing and processing parts of the cannabis plant, typically focusing on flowering buds containing the most trichome, where all of the psychoactive THC is concentrated. Hash was particularly popular through the 20th century and therefore the word became synonymous with cannabis.
